South Central Idaho is a treasure trove of natural beauty, offering a plethora of breathtaking destinations for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. From serene lakes to awe-inspiring waterfalls, and from enchanting caves to stunning hiking trails, this region has something for everyone. In this blog post, we hope to take you on a virtual journey through some of the most captivating places to visit and hike in for you next day trip in the area!

1. Box Canyon Springs

Nestled amidst the picturesque Snake River Canyon, Box Canyon Springs is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The crystal-clear spring waters create a serene oasis, attracting visitors with its tranquil atmosphere. The area can be a bit challenging to hike down into so bring your hiking shoes! Don't forget your camera, as this place offers fantastic photo opportunities because of the pristine water and beautiful canyon walls. We recommend using a GPS to guide you there, because like many hiking places in Idaho, can be a bit out of the way. But Box Canyon is fairly simple to get to. From Wendell, take East Main Street and follow it until you reach Box Canyon Road. Turn right onto Box Canyon Road and continue for approximately 4.5 miles until you reach the parking area for Box Canyon Springs. Be aware that there may be limited parking during peak seasons.

2. Blue Heart Springs

Prepare to be enchanted by the ethereal beauty of Blue Heart Springs. Located along the Snake River, this natural wonder is known for its captivating blue waters and surreal atmosphere. Blue Heart Springs is located on the Snake River, so you must take a watercraft, such as a boat or a kayak to get there. Because of this, you will need to do some research on how best to get there and where to rent equipment based on your needs. Once you’re there, you will see that the water transitions slowly from the green-brown water of the Snake River to the crystal blue of the spring. Blue Heart Springs is a perfect spot for nature lovers, swimmers, and photographers. It is surrounded by many big rocks to jump off of or sit on, basking in the sun. The area does get crowded, so plan your trip accordingly.

3. Dierkes Lake

For a day of outdoor fun and relaxation, Dierkes Lake is another great destination in South Central Idaho. Surrounded by many cliffs and large rocks, Dierkes offers opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. You will often find families surrounding the lake and swimming in the water, as well as rock climbers and hikers around the other side of the lake. There are several lakeside trails, and wonderful panoramic views. It is also common to see wildlife, but be sure to respect their space and not to get to close. Dierkes lake has a family-friendly atmosphere and can be visited for a wide range of recreational activities. Dierkes is located inside Twin Falls City limits and can be easily navigated to using a GPS. It is located off the right hand side of Falls Avenue if you are heading East. There is a $5 vehicle fee starting from March until the end of September.

4. Jerome Clay Caves

The Clay Caves are fairly simple, but fun to visit and explore. South-Central Idaho is full of lava caves and tunnels that each are unique and fun to explore. The Clay caves are located about half an hour north-east of Twin falls and a high-clearance vehicle is recommended to reach it because of the rough terrain. The surrounding area is also a great place to hike if you like the desert landscape and igneous rock formations. We recommend using a GPS to get there because it is a bit out of the way. 5. Canyon Rim Trail

The Canyon Rim Trail is a popular hiking destination and a bit more casual. It has a paved walking/biking path and has plenty of benches to rest on, as well as information plaques that tell the history of the area. The trail winds along the rim of Snake River Canyon, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Be prepared for steep sections and to be fairly close to the canyon rim. There are fences to prevent people from accidentally wandering too close. The trail also is home to the iconic jump site of Evel Knieval, where he attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in a rocket-powered motorcycle.
